Conival, Ben Extra Assynt and a Munro prime
I can’t even recall the final time I reached the summits of the 2 iconic northern Munros of Conival and Ben Extra Assynt. I consider it was greater than a decade in the past and I don’t assume the climate was that nice. In any case, I usually discover that it takes a second outing to a spot to really take pleasure in and bear in mind the views, environment, challenges and rewards. That is precisely what occurred this summer time after I walked these two Munros and an outlier southern Ben Extra Assynt prime.
Brilliantly, an electrical campervan journey coincided with a weekend of sunny and shiny climate in late April. This meant that the 20km stroll, from Inchandamph, was a crammed with incredible vistas throughout the very good Assynt panorama and additional afield to the coast and west coast islands.
I walked with pals Cath, Claire, Geraldine and Rachel and we adopted a well-trodden path for many of the route.
Bagging Munros: Conival and Ben Extra Assynt
The stroll begins from Inchnadamph, subsequent to the Explorer’s Lodge, and we from there walked a large observe that headed in the direction of a lovely gorge. As the trail narrowed, we began to climb beside a stream of beautiful clear water with waterfalls and swimming pools on occasion.
Slowly however absolutely we saved on climbing and finally noticed a bealach at round 600m from the place we might spot Conival. Then started the steeper ascent on a rock-strewn path to achieve the highest of Conival at 987m.
From Conival, we regarded alongside an extended ridge heading east. At first, we descended on the ridge, then climbed once more to achieve the highest of Ben Extra Assynt at 998m. It didn’t appear to take too lengthy and as we walked and talked, we additionally loved extra fabulous views.
From Ben Extra Assynt, a southern outlier summit might be seen. This peak is labeled as a Munro Prime, which I used to be additionally eager to bag. I’m now bagging Munro Prime summits after I spot them on the map.
My pals agreed to accompany me to the 960m prime and whereas it added one other 2km to the route, plus a brief scramble on the way in which there and again, we have been all blissful to take advantage of the nice situations and to take pleasure in much more spectacular views. The scramble is a bit intimidating for a short time however nothing too difficult.
To return to the beginning, the route took us again over the Munro summits of Ben Extra Assynt and Conival. This meant that in whole we walked to 5 summits and climbed a complete elevation of 1455m.
Whereas it had been a reasonably lengthy outing it was additionally massively rewarding. In my view, there’s little to beat an enormous day within the mountains, strolling and chatting with pals and taking in beautiful views, particularly of Assynt, beneath a blue and sunny sky.
